Cologne Cathedral - Kölner Dom

July 13, 2017

Will you ever go to a city for visiting just one attraction/monument? Sounds crazy? But Cologne Cathedral (called as Kölner Dom in German language) is worth of it!. If you ever happen to stop by Cologne for a short duration, then go to the Dom atleast.

The magnificent Cathedral is just outside the Koln HBF and can be seen almost from anywhere in the city, such a tall tower it is. The cathedral is known for its rich Gothic architecture inside and out and honored by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites.

We did go into the Dom, thrilled with the glorious architecture and glass paintings; looked multiple sculptures and shrines (notably the Chapel of the Three Kings /  3 magi) and captured dozens of photos (photography is allowed inside the Dom) . It was ~30deg C outside, so we did not dare to climb the south tower to see the worlds’ largest swinging bell.

Some Interesting facts:
  • It took more than six centuries for the structure to be completed. Construction was started during the 13th century, and it took 632 years to get finished.
  • It was the tallest structure in the world for a four year period, from the year 1880 until the year 1884.
  • The present cathedral structure is the third structure built on this location. During the fourth century a Roman temple was erected, and in the year 818 a second religious structure was placed here. When this church burned down in 1248, the present cathedral structure was started on the same spot.
  • During the World War II the cathedral was hit by fourteen bombs, but the cathedral was not destroyed

 What to See & Do:
  • Interior Cathedral: Beautiful Glass paintings all over, Mary’s Chapel,  Chapel of the Three Kings, Cathedral treasury
  • Exterior Cathedral: Walk around and see the history in pictures
  • The South Tower : Climb the 509 steps to witness the largest church bell and for a fantastic view of the city.

Tickets/Fees:
Entrance is free ; to climb the tower, you need to pay EUR 6 p.p

A visit to Cologne is not complete without a visit to the Dom. This is clearly the absolute must-see for this amazing city. It’s Gorgeous inside and out!!!
